Reunification Therapy

Reunification therapy is a structured, child-focused therapeutic process aimed at supporting children to safely re-establish, repair, or strengthen a relationship with a parent where the relationship has become disrupted, strained, or estranged. These situations may arise following parental separation, family conflict, prolonged absence, or difficulties in parent-child engagement.

Hollie provides a neutral and therapeutically guided process that prioritises the child’s emotional wellbeing, developmental needs, and psychological safety, whilst supporting healthier parent-child connection and relational repair where appropriate.

Our Approach Includes:

1.

Initial Assessment and Intake:

The process begins with separate intake sessions with each parent and, where appropriate, individual sessions with the child. This assists in understanding the family dynamics, the child’s presentation, barriers to engagement, and any relevant safety or welfare considerations. Relevant court documents and professional reports may also be reviewed to inform the therapeutic approach.

2.

Child-Focused Therapeutic Planning:

Reunification work is paced according to the child’s developmental and emotional needs. Therapeutic goals are tailored to the family’s circumstances and may involve gradual re-engagement, improving emotional safety, rebuilding trust, and supporting healthier communication and interaction patterns over time.

3.

Therapeutic Reunification Sessions:

Structured therapeutic sessions support safe and supported parent-child interaction. Depending on the needs of the family, sessions may focus on strengthening attachment, improving communication, reducing relational anxiety, and facilitating more adaptive patterns of engagement between the child and parent.

4.

Parent Support and Psychoeducation:

Parents may also be provided with therapeutic support, guidance, and psychoeducation throughout the process. This may include strategies to reduce conflict, better understand the child’s emotional experience, support emotional regulation, and facilitate the child’s engagement in a safe and developmentally appropriate manner.

5.

Ongoing Monitoring and Review:

Progress throughout the reunification process is regularly reviewed and monitored. The process remains flexible and responsive to the evolving needs of the child and family. Given the complexity of reunification matters, it is often difficult to determine at the outset how many sessions may be required.

Goal of Reunification Therapy:

The overall goal of reunification therapy is to support the child in developing or restoring a safe, stable, and meaningful relationship with both parents where appropriate. The process aims to reduce barriers to engagement, support the child’s emotional wellbeing, improve relational functioning within the family system, and facilitate healthier patterns of communication, connection, and attachment over time. Reunification therapy also seeks to support parents in responding to the child’s emotional and developmental needs in a manner that promotes safety, stability, and long-term relational wellbeing.
